Nalanda University - oldest university in the world
The Nalanda University in Bihar is the center of learning the world have ever seen. The ruins of the university which has been excavated is situated at 90km in the south east of Patna, Bihar. Nalanda University founder was Chandragupta Maurya. The Nalanda university of Nalanda was founded in the period of Guptas around 5th century.

There were around thousands of students who were coming to take education here from all around the world. The subjects which were taught here are philosophy, logic theology, Grammar, Buddhist scriptures, and Chikitsa Vidya that means medicine etc. The famous Chinese pilgrims such as Heum Tsang who received the Indian name Mokshdeva was also a student of Nalanda University. Nalanda University's importance remained till the 12th century as a monastic University. The library was located in a nine storied building.
Students from many parts of the world like Korea, china, Indonesia, came here to gain knowledge. Eventually the Nalanda becomes the greatest Buddhist learning center.
From the excavations of Nalanda the excavators found a row of monastery sites all of same pattern but the most important one is the site number 1. There was a temple of Lord Buddha and a well in the courtyard of monastery. The excavations also showed that the university had got great Stupas. The main stupa of this university has got a large image of Lord Buddha.
The total excavation work has been done over a large area of 14th hectors. The university received the royal patronage from the great emperors of Kannauj and by the Pala king's. Nalanda was a great university of its time with over 10,000 students and 1500 Teachers.
