First Phase Bihar Assembly Elections 2010 begins today

This article gives information on the first phase of the 2010 Bihar Assembly Polls in Kosi-Seemanchal and Mithilanchal regions and the EC request for banning opinion polls on Bihar Assembly Elections 2010.

The first phase of 2010 Bihar Assembly Elections begins today in 8 districts: Kishanganj, Araria, Purnia, Madhepura, Saharsa, Katihar, Supaul and Madhubani. Voters have been queing up at the ballot booths to cast their valuable votes since 7a.m. Casting of votes will continue till 5p.m. (in 2 constituencies it is till 3p.m.).

The 2010 Bihar Assembly Elections is basically a three-way battle between present Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's ruling party; the alliance between Lalu Prasad Yadav and Ram Vilas Paswan; and the Congress party.

The next phases of the 2010 Bihar Assembly Elections will be on Oct 24, Oct 28, Nov 1, 9 and 20.

In an interesting development on the sidelines of the 2010 Bihar Assembly Elections, Election Commission Secretary K.F. Wilfred has requested the Law Ministry to issue an ordinance to ban opinion polls. He feels that opinion polls will affect the elections in Bihar from being conducted in a fair manner.
