Rao Jodha Park: A desert rock park in Jodhpur

Rao Jodha Park is a new tourist spot in the city which is in the evolving phase. It is very different from the other gardens in a city as there isn't much greenery to see and it's not really a place to relax on grass. Jodhpur is a popular tourist destination and continuous efforts are being made to promote it by adding something new for the tourists. With the same view, new tourist spots are being developed in the city so that the visitors have more options to explore when they come to Jodhpur. Rao Jodha Park is one such place. It is a latest addition to the tourist spots of Jodhpur. This park is situated near Mehrangarh, next to the road leading to the fort and further Jaswant Thada. It's a desert rock park.

History of Rao Jodha Park

Rao Jodha Park was established in the year 2006. The land nearby fort was not in use for a long time and had been populated by baavlia (Prosopis juliflora), a thorny shrub found in this part of the country. The efforts were then made to not only get this land rid of these shrubs, but also to give it a new identity. In this way Rao Jodha Park was born.

Features of Rao Jodha Park

As mentioned above, it is basically a desert rock park. You won't find lush green lawns or long columns of trees here. Unlike other gardens, this park gives you a feeling of little adventure as you walk on uneven terrains with rocks around you. It is advisable that you wear something like sports shoes here, else you will find it difficult to walk. One should bring in hats or caps for the protection from sun rays.

The plants that you find here are specifically desert plants. You will get to see different types of flowers which grown in dry areas. The park is spread over 70 acres and there are a no. of attractions for the visitors. The first stop is visitors' centre where the tourists can buy tickets or field guides. There is also a café where they can have refreshments. Tourists can then go to the gully, a rocky canyon. There are three different trails to walk on and the tourists can choose to walk on anyone as each one of them leads back to the visitors centre. And then there is plants nursery where you can see the plants growing. The plants are not up for the sale at this moment. The tourists can also spot different types of birds here.

Rao Jodha Park admission timings and park ticket prices

The park is open throughout the year and the timings are 9 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. The entry for adults costs Rs 30 while the students are charged Rs. 10

The best time to visit this place is between October and February when the intensity of sun is less.
