Not many of us know Powai Lake in Mumbai is an artificial lake in Mumbai. The lake was built by the British in 1890 enhances the charm of Mumbai city. It is named after a Parsi merchant who owned the Framaji Kavasj Powai Estate.

It is situated in the Northern suburb, stretched towards the west of the Indian Institute of Techology, (IIT) of Science and Technology.

Another famous institution, the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) is also located close to the lake. Housing complexes and hotels are developed surrounding the lake . Therefore, population around the lake has substantially increased over the years.

Powai lake is a peaceful retreat away from the hustle –bustle of the city. Once upon a time Powai Lake served as a source of drinking water for the Mumbai natives. After having gone through many stages of water quality degradation the lake water which used to supply to Mumbai for drinking water has been declared unfit to drink..

Calm and congenial environment of Powai Lake attracts a lot of tourists throughout the year and everyone just love the serene and pleasant ambience of the place.

Besides tourist attraction, for the local people it is a great picnic spot who visit the place frequently just to wander in a relaxed mood around its bank and enjoy the bliss of solitude.

Powai Lake is easily approachable from King's Circle, Sion and Kurla , and also from Santa Cruz and Andheri. . One can easily reach Powai Lake by boarding buses or trains, or by hiring autos or taxis from the city.

Since the lake is a stretch of water just by the side of a motorable road, one can enjoy a delightful car drive while travelling by car. Balsam bushes, in their full bloom, in pink-purple color are seen around the lake periphery, like a carpet is a wonderful sight.

Opposite IIT Main Gate, Powai, there is a beautiful temple "Hari Om Nagar Shree Ayyappa Vishnu Temple. It is a celestial beauty depicting traditional temple architecture and culture of Kerala . Its prodigy, Shree Ayyappa Vishnu Temple , has been getting wide acclaims and applauds all over Mumbai, mainly for its highly traditional rituals, poojas and various devotional endeavors. The devotees throng to this temple seeking peace and prosperity, offering poojas and donations for fulfilling their dreams.

In the greenery valley of Mumbai's suburban haven Powai, lies the Chinmayananda Mission's Sandeepany Sadhanalaya, set up in 1961. Situated on a hill top, the Sadhanalaya provides a panoramic view of the Powai lake and the surrounding areas. Located inside the complex is a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Jagadeeswara. This Shiva temple is remarkable for the mammoth Shivalingam on the dome of the temple.

It is a spiritual and holistic place tourist love to visit.
