Chilika- a beautiful lake

Chilika Lake is the charming and serene lake of Orissa and one of the major tourist’s attractions of the state.

Chilika a beautiful lake along the coastline of Orissa is the biggest Inland lake of India. Chilika covers an area of over 1100 sq km and is an absolute paradise for tourists interested in bird watching, fishing, boating etc. The lake is the winter abode for thousands of migratory birds who come here from all around the world. It is believed that Chilika Lake is home to over 225 species of fish and more than 350 non-aquatic plants apart from numerous water plants, phytoplankton and algae.

Chilika Lake has its banks across three major districts of the state of Orissa which are Puri, Ganjam and Khurda and finally enters the Bay of Bengal. The charming beauty of this elegant lake is just fantastic and it is an amazing experience to visit Chilika Lake. A glimpse of the Chilika Lake from moving trains and vehicles from nearby areas is a mesmerizing. The atmosphere is serene and set amidst the blue expanse of water on one side and majestic range of hills on the other. Chilika Lake has a number of beautiful islands and a boat ride on the lake would be an everlasting memory.

There are a number of attractions in and around the Chilika lake and one should visit all these attractive spots for a complete and fulfilling trip to this graceful lake.

It is an attractive island which is an abode for various migratory birds. This beautiful island within the Chilika lake which has been notified as a Bird Sanctuary under Wildlife (Protection) Act. Even other important organisations like National Wetlands, Mangroves and coral reefs Committee of Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India have approved the lake's importance for conservation of numerous endangered species of birds.

This is wonderful place to see dolphins.

Parikud & Malud
These are some of the most beautiful islands blessed with scenic beauty and are located within the lake.

This is a famous island and holds religious significance as it has the temple of the island Goddess "Kalijai". A wonderful fair is organised here during the festival of Makar Sankaranti that falls towards the middle of the month of January.

How to reach?
Chilika Lake can be easily reached by various modes of transportations.

Air: The nearest airport is Bhubaneswar which is at a distance of about 105 km from the lake. Bhubaneswar is well connected to all major cities across India.

Rail: The nearest railway station is Balugaon and Rambha which are about 5 km from the Chilika Lake. Trains from all parts of the country come to these stations.

Road: National Highway no. 5 connects Chilika to major cities like Calcutta, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Visakhapatnam. Regular bus service is available to Chilika Lake from Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Puri and Berhampur.
