Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja was a great poet to be born in Orissa and is still remembered for his great work for enriching Oriya literature with his great poems. Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja was born on Sripanchami day on 1670 at Kulada, Ghumusara. He was popularly known as Kabi Samrat for his great command over Oriya language and skilful use of words for making beautiful lyrics.

Some of the most beautiful poetic work of Upendra Bhanja includes Koti Brahmanda Sundari, Lavanyabati, Premasudhanidhi, Rasikaharabali, Subhadra-Parinya and Chitrakavya-Bondodhya. If we carefully analyze we will find that most of his poems were based on themes like beautiful woman, love and marriage.

Upendra Bhanja wrote most of his poetry towards the later half of the seventeenth century and early part of the eighteenth century. He was a master class in poetry style of Reeti in Sanskrit poetry. Most of poets of that era wrote in Reeti style but the work and style of Upendra Bhanja is considered to be the best of all.

Upendra Bhanja was born in a royal family but he devoted his whole life to poetry away from the charm and comfort of a royal life. He had completed training on Sanskrit classical literature and had written a dictionary Geetabhidhana to assist poets.
