Karimganj District of Assam

One of the classic district of Assam Karimganj District is situated in the remote north-eastern corner of India and is placed at a Distance of 338 Kms. from State Capital. Major tourist attractions like Chatachura Range, Adamail Range Duhalia Range are located here.

Karimganj District of AssamThe 27th districts of Assam, Karimganj District is placed with its district headquarters at Karimganj. The boundry of this district includes in north by Bangladesh and Cachar district; on the south by Mizoram and Tripura, on the west by Bangladesh and Tripura and on the east by Hailakandi district. It also provides an international border with Bangladesh. Basically Karimganj district is located between92 degrees 15 min. and 92 degrees 35 min. east longitudes and 24 degrees 15 min. and 25 degrees 55 min. North latitudes.

Legend history of this famous place is comprised into four time i.e early time, middle age, British Era and the period of country`s partition. In the 7th Century, Karimganj area along with foothills of North Cachar Hills had run on the Samatata Kingdom of the East Bengal. King Srichandra of the renowned Chandra Dynasty of Eastern Bengal induced this total place within his Vanga Kingdom in 10th century. In 1765, the Sylhet district part of Karimganj was passed on to the British. Finally the Karimganj sub-division under Sylhet District was built in the year 1878 at Karimganj city.

The district is situated at the southern part of Assam and occupies a total area of about 1809 sq kms. Grand area of Karimganj District is covered by forests, agricultural plains, low wetlands, hilly terrains and various rivers with their tributaries. It also includes several gigantic hilly spots for the tourists that run across the district.

The administrative of Karimganj District is supervised by the Deputy Commissioner. It also comprises one Karimganj sub-division. There are five Revenue Circles or Tehsils like Karimganj, Badarpur, Nilambazar, Patherkandi and Ramkrishna Nagar under the sub-division.

The most interesting things to observe in this city are many plantation crops, tea and rubber are the major ones. Karimganj District has a heavy potential for fishery, with a large number of rivers, swamps, ponds and other natural water bodies situated here.

The nearest airport is Kumbhirgram near Silchar at a distance of 83 kms from Karimganj district. The important road line linked to the district is NH 44 which runs from Shillong in Meghalaya. Best train fascilities are available to the other place includeing Guwahati, Lumding, Silchar, Dharmanagar-Kumarghat of Tripura, Bhairabi of Mizoram.
