Rohtang Tunnel-Asia’s Longest Tunnel in Creation

Introduction to Rohtang Tunnel, Kullu:

The foundation stone of Rohtang Tunnel- a masterpiece to be constructed was laid down by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi along with Honurable Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal and Virbhadra Singh on 28th June, 2010.

Rohtang Tunnel will be 8.8 kms long and will be then considered the longest tunnel in the entire Asia. Rohtang tunnel will connect Lahaul and Spiti valley with Manali and Leh which are presently land locked. It is supposed that the construction work of Rohtang Tunnel will be completed in the year 2015. Construction of 8.8kms long Rohtang Tunnel and that too at a very chilling height is a very tough job. As such, engineers of BRO have been given the contract of Rohtang Tunnel. BRO completed its golden jubilee recently.

Brief History Related to Rohtang Tunnel, Kullu:

For the first time in the year 1983, then Prime Minsiter Indira Gandhi had announced for the creation of Rohtang Tunnel in Keylong for the very first time. Due to the sudden assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984, nothing was done. Later in 1987 , in order to fulfill the dream of Indira Gandhi, her son Rajiv Gandhi ordered to complete all the formalities related to Rohtang Tunnel. The formailies done were left as it is after the assassination of Rajiv gandhi in 1991. After 26 long years, the dream of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi marked its beginning after the foundation stone was laid by Sonia Gandhi.
