K. U. Nivas at Shimla

Kurushetra University has constructed a residential complex at Cart road, Shimla. The complex, which was inaugurated by them Haryana Chief Minister, Mr. Bansan Lal, on June 5 1999, has been named Kurushetra University Nivas. It was with the persitent efforts of the Haryana Governor, Mr.Mahavir Prasad, who is also the Cancellor of the university, that the project was taken up and completed. In March, 1997, Mr. Mahavir Prasad, who was also holding the charge of go0vernor of Himachal Pradesh then, laid the foundation stone of the Nivas.
The land for the Nivas was donated by the Amritdhara Dharmarth. The project was hanging fire for the pat 30 years because of various legal complications in taking procession of the land. It was through the good offices of the governor that these problems were solved and the construction started in 1997. The project has cost about Rs. 91 lakh to the university.
It has a covered area of 161.88 sq. meters on the ground floor, 254.97 sq meters on the second floor. The Nivas has five sets, two floor big dormitories for boys and girls and big halls for 60 to student. The ground floor gas a reception room, drawing-cum-dining room.
The Nivas has been provided with a big parking lot and parks are being developed.
The students of the university, its affiliated collage and their employees can stay and eat at the Nivas on fixed and cheaper rates than the market. The students and teachers of the affiliated collage have contributed over Rs 38 lakh for the Nivas.
Only one third of the land had been utilized for the Nivas. In the remaining portion, the varsity has a proposal to construct building needed for its educational purpose. For instance a seminar hall a lecture hall and a workshop hall would be constructed to meet the needs of the distance-education project students.
At present 6,000 students from Himachal Pradesh were enrolled in 60 courses run by the directorate of distance education of the varsity.
