The Bhakra Nangal Dam is the largest dam in Asia and is located across Sutlej River at the border of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
Length of dam is 518.25 ms and breadth is 304.84 ms. It is the biggest multi-purpose project in India. Its construction was started in 1948 and it was completed in 1968. This is also known as the highest gravity dam in the world.
It was dedicated to India by Jawaharlal Nehru in year 1963.Purpose
The main purpose behind its construction was to provide irrigation to the states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The other purpose was to controll the flood in monsoon.Use

It is also known for its reservoir Gobind Sagar Reservoir which have capacity to store around 9340 million cu meters of water.
