Biography of Tenzin Gyatso- the 14th Dalai Lama
The religious name 14th Dalai Lama is Tenzin Gyatso who was born on 6th of July 1935. He is the current Dalai Lama. This name of him is shortened from Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso and when born was Lhamo Dondrub. Dalai Lamas are the most respectful persons in the religion of Tibetan Buddhism. In the year 1989, Nobel Peace Prize to Dalai Lama was awarded for his contribution to bring peace in the world.
The Dalai Lama was born in Taktser, Qinghai and after 2 years he was believed to be the rebirth of 13th Dalai Lama. But, originally he was declared the 14th Dalai Lama in 17 November 1950. At this stage he was only 15 years old. In the year 1959, the China regards the uprising power of feudal system of landlords. At this time, the Dalai Lama deannounced the existence of People's Republic and made a Tibetan government in exile. Then after, he travelled the whole world to spread the knowledge of Tibetan and teaching Buddhism. He started many institutions during this journey. Lhamo Döndrub was born to a horse trading and farming family in Taktser which is in the eastern part of Tibetan region of Amdo. Thondup was given many toys and relics of 13th Dalai Lama. It was noticed that he correctly recognized the belongings of 13th Dalai Lama. A Chinese Muslim General named Ma Bufang did not want Thondup to become the 14th Dalai Lama. He told his men to keep to boy in House arrest. General explained that he just kept the Dalai Lama under protection. After some years, Lhamo was renamed Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso who was declared as the 14th Dalai Lama then. His devotees were used to call him as His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
He received his early education from Yongdzin Ling Rinpoche and Yongdzin Trijang Rinpoche . When he was 11 years old he met an Australian mountaineer whos name was Heinrich Hareer. He became the videographer and tutor of Dalai Lama who taught him about the world outside the Lhasa. During the age of 23 he took his first examination at the Lhasa's Jokhang Temple in the annual Monlam.Exile of Dalai Lama to India
At the 1959 Tibetan uprising outset, fearing for the life of Dalai Lama, he moved into India on 30th of March 1959. In India, they reached Tezpur in Assam on 18 April. After some time, Lama made the Government of Tibet in Exile in Dharamshala, India. This place is often referred to the little Lhasa. Approximately 80,000 Tibetans followed him here. He established Tibetan educational system to teach the culture of Tibetan to children. He taught about the language, history, religion and culture of Tibetan Buddhism. Then the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies was introduced for primary study of Tibetan in India.
Dalai Lama also appealed the UN to conserve the rights of Tibetans. This resulted in adopting three resolutions by General Assembly in 1959, 1961 and 1965. Also in the year 1963, he promulgated an idea of making democratic constitution which was based on Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In this, he created an elected parliament and an administration to promote Tibetan culture. In 1970, he opened a library in Dharamshala which was named Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. The actual home of Dalai Lama is in McLeodganj in Himachal Pradesh which is in the Upper part of Dharamshala. In this library, nearly 80,000 manuscripts and books related to Tibetan and Buddhism were kept. This Library have the resources related to Tibetan history, politics and culture. Dalai Lama has taught thousands of his devotees. Also, he is the author of many books including books based on the topic Dzogchen, which is a practice in which he is involved. In the year 2007, in the month of February Lama was named as the Presidential Distinguised Professer at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. This was his first time when he accepted a university appointment. April 2008 was the time when Dalai Lama gave lectures at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and also at Colgate Univercity in New York.
