The Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is one of the best place one must visit once, which is at southern part, which is situated near Mandya district of Karnataka, which is just 20 km away from Mysore. This bird sanctuary is situated on the banks of river Kaveri and this place is adjacent to Srirangapatna.

History of the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

The world renowned ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali once has observed as this spot as the destination of migratory birds where nesting ground and he influence Wodeyar's of erstwhile rulers of Mysore and from that time onwards this place has been declared as bird sanctuary since the year 1940.

Flora and Fauna at Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

The rare kind of typical species can be found here like Terminalia Arjun, many bamboo groves and also pandanus trees, here many eucalyptus trees can be found and even acacia trees were also planted here, as the planting of these trees looks to an forethought of those times to make home for native species. Other species like Mysorensis and a rare breed of Colchicaceae were also here.

This place is home for some special type of mammals like Bonnet Macaque, colonies of flying foxes are found here, other mammals like common palm civet, monitor lizard and Indian gray mongoose were also found here.

The breeds like painted stork, Asian openbill stork, wolly necked stork, common spoonbill, black headed ibis, lesser whistling duck, white ibis, stork billed kingfisher, Indian shag are other types of species can be found here.
