Srinagar – Uttaranchal
Srinagar is located at a distance of about 30 kms from Pauri on the shores of river Alakhnanda. The famous Garhwal University is also situated here. The total area of the place is about 9.695 square kilometers. The place is one of the biggest townships of the district. Srinagar is located at an altitude of about 580 meters above the sea level. The place is centrally located from Kotdwar, Rishikesh, Tehri Gharwal and Badrinath. The place was once the capital of the Kings of Garhwal. The name of the place is derived from Srixantra chunk where people were sacrificed to death to satisfy the heavenly power. The convention of killing people was stopped by Ali Guru Snakaracharya by throwing the chunk into river Alakhnanda.
Places of attraction in Srinagar
There are many famous temples in Srinagar. One of the most famous temples of Srinagar is Kamleshwar temple. As per the beliefs of the local people Lord Shiva was worshipped by Lord Rama with thousand lotus flowers. Lord Rama felt one flower short to make the number of flowers to one thousand and one and for this he offered one of his to Lord Shiva. This is the reason that he is also famous with the name "Kamal Nayan" which means lotus eyed. So, the name of the temple was kept as Kamaleshwar which means lotus God. On the occasion of "Vaikunth Chaturdashi" Lord Shiva is worshiped here with lighted lamps for the whole night. The temple is a must visit place spiritually as well as a tourist place.
Dhara Devi Temple
The temple is one of the most famous temples of the Garhwal region. Dhara Devi temple is situated on Rudarprayag road about 17kms from Srinagar. The temple is visited by many piligrims from many parts of the country to worship Goddess Dhari.
Develgarh was recognized by the famous king of Kangra. The name of the king was Deval and hence the name of the place is Devalgarh. Develgarh is situated at a distance of about 20kms form Srinagar. The places to visit here include Rajeshwari Temple, Gauri Devi Temple and Lakshmi Narayan Temple.
The temple was built by Keshorai in around 1682 AD. The temple was constructed with giant stones and these stones have inscriptions of the olden times. The temple was built very beautifully.
The temple was built by Adi Guru Shankracharya. The temple is having idols of God Vishnu and Mata Lakshmi. The temple is situated at a distance of about 2 kms from Srinagar.
The main languages spoken here are Garhwali, Hindi and English.
Best time to visit
Srinagar can be visited any time in the year. The climate here is pleasant round the year.
Cottons are recommended for summer and woolens for winter.

By Train The nearest railway station is Kotdwar which is about 139kms and the other nearest railway station is Rishikesh which is about 102kms from Srinagar.
By Road Srinagar is well connected to major cities like Kotdwar, Nainatal, Rishikesh and Dehradun etc.
