The Shiv Mandir ( Shiva Temple) is situated behind Total Mall ( earlier Kemp Fort) in old Airport road, Bangalore. The Shiva Temple is also called Shiva Ganesha Temple since there are two huge statues of Lord Shiva & Lord Ganesha are situated. The deities of the Shiva Ganesha Temple, Bangalore are Shiva & Ganesha. Lord Shiva is one of the 'Thrimurthis' ( Trinity) as per Hindu mythology. The trimurthis are Brahma (Creator), Vishnu (Protector) and Shiva (Destroyer). The major attractions of the Shiva Ganesha temple are the huge statues of Lord Shiva & Lord Ganesha.
You can see the statue of Ganesha at the entrance. This idol is about 32 ft tall. Lord Ganesha is the Lord of obstacles. So, he is also called Vighnesha, vighneshwara ( ' vighna ' means obstacles) . Usually, Ganesha is honoured at the beginning of ceremonies, to get rid of obstacles.The other names for Ganesha are Ganesh, Ganapathi, Vinayaka.
The major attraction of the Shiva temple is the 65 ft Shiva temple. Lord shiva is sitting in a lotus with an artificial 'Kailasa ' ( the Lord's heavenly abode) background. The holy river Ganga is also created artifically as to originate from the Lord's hair locks. The statue is surrounded by a pond called ' Manasa Sarovar'. It is believed that if you throw special coins after chanting ' Om Nama Shavaya' 7 times your wishes will get fulfilled. The coins you have to buy from the counter by paying Rs. 10. And, lighting a candle and throwing into the pond (Manasa sarovar)will wash off your sins. There is one box in which people can post letters to Lord Shiva. A Holy cave is located behind the statue through which the devotees are allowed to pass through. This yarta (journey) is known as 'amarnath yatra'. there is 12 beautifully decorated Shivalingams in the passage out of which one is made of ice. The main festival comes during Shivrathi.
