In early years of telecommunication the only way of linking one telephone with another was by fixed cables. Satellites changed everything the way of communication. Graham Bell called the father of a telephone. In 1876 he patented the device, which he called the harmonic telegraph. This was the first telephone. This is the timeline to the revolution.
1793 :- Word "telegraph" first used (in France).
1837 :- Charles Wheatstone and William Cooke setup first electric telegraph in London.
1843 :- Morse code inventor Samuel Morse (USA) sends first telegraph message between Washington and Baltimore.
1850 :- Telegraph cable laid between England and France across English Channels, but fails 12000 miles of telegraph line in USA.
1851 :- Thomas Crampton lays successful Dover-Calasis cable.
1852 :- First telegraph line in India; there are now 23,000 miles of telegraph lines in USA.
1854 :- First Australian telegraph line (Melbourne to Williamstown).
1858 :- First transatlantic telegraph cable laid, but fails
1861 :- First USA transcontinental telegraph .
1862 :- 32,000 miles of telegraph line and more than 5 million message sent in USA.
1867 :- First theory suggest using radio waves for telecommunication.
1876 :- Alexander Graham Bell patents the telephone –beating his rival Elisha Gray by a matter of hours. He make his historic first call to his assistant, Thomas Watson, who is in the next room : "Mr Watson, come hear, I want to see you." The invention is demonstrated at the Centennial Exposition, Philadelphia, USA where Emperor Don Pedro of Brazil hears Bell recite the " To be or not to be" speech from Hamlet over the phone.
1877 :- Bell makes the first long distance call between Boston and Salem, Massachusetts ,14 miles away.
1878 :- Bell demonstrated his telephone to Queen Vectoria at Osborne House on the Isle of wight . She becomes the first European monarch to use a phone.
1884 :- First telephone handset is launched.
1889 :- First coin in slot public phone , USA.
1891 :- France and England are connected by telephone cables.
1894 :- Guglielmo Marconi invents the wireless telegraphy.
1897 :- There are seven phone per 1,000 people in the USA.
1901 :- Marconi sends a radio signal across Atlantic.
1902 :- The trans Pacific telephone cable connects Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
1907 :- There are an estimated 1,027,348 miles of land telecommunication lines and 233,823 miles of submarine cable wordwide.
1914 :- The first radio message is sent to an aircraft; the first transcontinental telephone call is made in USA.
1919 :- Rotary dial telephone are invented.
1945 :- British writer Arthur C. Clarke proposes putting communication satellites in orbit above the Earth , which moves at the same speed as the Earth spins; this means they stay in a fixed position and communication with the ground is not interrupted.
1956 :- The first transatlantic telephone cable is laid.
1965 :- Intelsat I (Early Bird ), the first commercial telecommunication satellite is launched .
1967 :- The first cordless telephones go on sale.
1975 :- The first handheld mobile phones are sold.
1988 :- The first transatlantic fiber optic cable is laid.
2004 :- There are 1.2 billion telephone lines around the world.
2005 :- Mobile phone users now number more than 2 billion wordwide.
2006 :- US company Western Union ends its telegraph service after 150 years . as e-mails replacement telegrams.
