Mylapore's global importance and its spiritual importance

Mylapore has a global importance for many reasons. The world famous kabhaleshwarar temple is situtuated in this place. It is a birth place of the Tamil poet, saint thiruvalluvar, who gave the holy script thirkkural. It is the place, Thomas the apostle, one of the apostle of Lord Jesus Christ, Died and buried before his body was moved to Edessa.The santhome basilica built on this site.

Ptolemy, Egyptian geographer and traveler had arrived in this place which was once a port city. In his books he had described about the place mylapore and the great kabhaleeshvarar temple. Another traveler Marco polo also visited this place. In his books he had given the details about the people's customs and religion, also about the place.

Origin of the name mylapore

In ancient period mylapore was a temple centre, it was called as vedapuri. Generally Brahmins used to live around the temples that take care of the temples. The smartha Brahmins were the first people to settle in this place. There are two opinions for the name mylapore. One is that the may name came to be known from Tamil word mayil aarppur or mayil akavum oor, meaning peacock screaming place. Second, god Sivas consort goddess parvathi did penance in the form of peahen in this place. The shrine of peahen is in the kapaleeshvar temple, from which the name mylapore derived. In Tamil mayil means peacock.

The world famous temple and other temples in mylapore

The Kabhaleshwarar temple is one of the most important temples in the world. It was built 300-400 years ago. In kapaaleeshwarar temple a miracle was performed by a great saint named Sri Gnana sambamthar. He gave life to the girl named poombhavai from her ashes, which was preserved by his father. Ptolemy, Egyptian geographer and traveler, had mentioned about this great temple in his books.

Adikesava perumal temple and Sri Srinivasa temple are most famous temples in mylapore.These are some temple in mylapore: Nava sakthi vinayaka temple and veera anjaneyar temple near Luz, Mandhava perumal temple, Mundakakanni Amman temple, Kolavizhi Amman temple, Velleeswarar temple, Malleswarar temple, Kaaraneeshwarar temple, Veerabadra swami temple, Virupaaksheeshwarar temple, Apparswamy temple, Shirdi Sai temple, Nandalala temple, Thiruvalluvar temple, and Sangalneer Pillayar temple.

Luz church is first church in the name of mother Mary. It was built by Portuguese missionary Franciscan. Luz church also called as kattu koil in Tamil because it was located in the forest.

First carnatic music sabha in the south India in 1896

In late 19th century some of the carnatic music lovers felt to preserve and foster its beauty by establishing an organization like sabha. In 1896, Mani thirumalachariar formed the sangeetha vidwat sabha in 1896. It was first carnatic music sabha in the south India. In 1900 it was renamed as parthasarathy swamy sabha.

In 1920's some of the music lovers felt to have an academy for music. In 1927 all India music conference held in madras. To encourage the practice of music they recommended for a formation of an academy for music. In 1928 music academy was founded in madras. It was formally inaugurated in y.m.a.i auditorium in18 august 1928. Its office was located in the dispensary, no 323, thambu chetty st, of dr. u. Rama rao the founder president of music academy. Now it operated in t.t.krinamachari building. It is the important place for carnatic music festival in the month December-January.

In early 20th century it was a residence of British lawyers and statesman. So it elevated to the status of intellectual hub. Today too it remains so. There were no of music schools, colleges especially Sanskrit college and shopping centres. India's first digital media college-image College of arts animation and technology is here.
