Swami Vipulanada (1892-1947) – a Famous Tamil Social Reformer

Swami Vipulanada also known as Vipulananda Adigal born in March 27 1892 at Batticaloa, Sri Lanka . He was a Sri Lankan Tamil author. His father is Samithamby and mother Kannammai. His parents named him as "Mylvaganam". Vipulanada had his schooling at his own native village, after completing his schooling he went to London, where he had his Graduation in Science at University of London. He was basically a Tamil lover, so he did his Graduation Degree in Tamil, Tamil Pandithar, which was awared from Madurai Tamil Sangam, Thus he started his Tamil Language Service and Research. Apart from Vipulanada's knowledge of Tamil he also knew English, Greek, Latin, Sanskrit and Sinhala.
Swami Vipulananda In 1912, Vipulanada worked as a teacher in St. maichel College later in In 1927, Annamalai University started and in 1931 Swami Vipulanada became first Tamil Professor to this university. He was also the first Tamil Professor in University of Ceylon until his death on 1947. He started "Yalpaana Ariya Dravida Language Development center" for developing Tamil Language. Once Vipulananda met swami Sarvananda , the head of Ramakrishna Missiion in columbu , he impressed by him and he planned to do monastic training. So he gone to Ramakrishana Math, Maylapore, Chennai, where he undergone training in 1924. Swami sarvananda gave the name Vipulananda and he dedicated his life to educational and spiritual pursuits.

In 1925, Swami Vipulananda became an Administrator of Ramakrishna Mission, Srilanka. Thus Swami Vipulanada started his career as a Head of operations in Ramakrishna Mission, Srilanka. In the same time he worked as a Tamil Professor Srilankan University. Vipulanada interested in Tamil Music, this makes him to write a book called Yal Nool( book of Stringed Musical Instruments). This book contains all about Tamil and other Indian musical forms and its technicalities of Music. He wrote about instruments used for music and its technical features, how it makes music, how to use etc. Vipulanada's another contribution is Mathangaculamani, collection of Shakespeare's Plays. He also translated Swami Vivekanda's preaching and had provided his great contribution in many publications like Ramakrishna Vijayam (Tamil), Vedanta Kesari (English), Vivekananda (Tamil) and Prabuddha Bharata (English). He wants to proclaim Tamil Poems and devotional songs of sangam period worldwide, so he translated and published some of the Sangam period Tamil literature in to English.
