In Tamil culture every day of the week is dedicated to one god. Especially, Friday worship in Hindu houses is considered as mandatory in Hinduism. In Tamil they call it as "vellik kizhamai kumbiduthal". Friday worship must be performed with Sarkarai Pongal.
In ancient days this recipe is also prepared for celebrating happy events.

Let's see what are the ingredients needed for cooking Tamil Traditional recipe Sarkarai Pongal.
Rice - one cup
Milk - one cup
Pasi parruppu - 2-3 tablespoon
Jaggery - one and half cup
Cashewnuts - one tablespoon
Almonds - one tablespoon ( optional )
Raisin - one tablespoon
Saffron - one pinch ( optional )
Cardamom - 2-3 pinch ( powder )
Ghee - 2-3 tablespoon

Cooking Tamil Traditional Festival recipe Sarkarai Pongal

This Tamil recipe is an easy and quick recipe to cook as well. Chop the cashew nuts and almonds. Mix jaggery with one cup water; strain it and keep aside. Wash the rice and keep aside. Now heat the pan and roast the pasi parrupu or mong dal until it turns ligh brown. Add needed ghee to pan and roast cashew nuts, almonds and raisins one after the other. Keep it aside.

In a vessel add the washed rice, pasi parruppu, one cup milk and two cups water and cook it. When it boils well add the jaggery and mix well. After rice cooked completely add cashew nuts, almonds, raisin, cardamom powder, saffron and mix well then switch off the stove. Now Tamil Traditional Festival recipe Sarkarai Pongal is ready. Keep it in pooja, worship first and then serve it as prasadam.

How to eat Tamil Traditional Festival recipe Sarkarai Pongal.

Usually Sarkarai Pongal is eaten with vada. Definitely this combination gives a delicious taste. Sarkarai Pongal is also eaten along with curd and yellow banana. In Sarkarai Pongal, first add small quantity of curd. Make sure curd has a desirable sour taste. You may increase according to your taste. Mix it well.

Then smash one or half yellow banana. Banana quantity depends on its size and your taste. Make sure banana is ripped one. Mix this smashed banana with Sarkarai Pongal and curd mix. Taste it. I find no words to describe its deliciousness. Enjoy it.
