Sunderbans in West Bengal is located at the 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. This Sunderban National Park is one of the largest estuarine sanctuary in the world.

Sunderbans is the part of the world's largest delta formed by the river Ganges and the lower Brahmaputra. It is famous worldwide for the home of the elusive Royal Bengal tigers in West Bengal. The area is having a great scenic beauty which the tourists and the visitors really enjoy. This area consists of a rare wealth of wildlife. Many types of endangered species are also found here. It provides natural habitat for many types of species of animals. This park offers a perfect setting to give a wild experience of the wildness and the wild animals found over there. This Sunderbans is the only ecological habitat of the tigers not only in India but also in the world excepting in Bangladesh. This tiger Reserve has the largest concentration of wild tigers. More than 270 tigers are there in this natural park.

History of Sunderbans, Bengal


This Sunderban National Park was declared as a core area of Sunderbans Tiger reserve in 1973. It was declared wildlife sanctuary on 1977. On 1987 it was adorned on the UNESCO world heritage. In 1989 the Sunderban area as a whole was declared as a Biosphere Reserve.

Forests at Sunderban


It is the leading mangrove forest in the world. Lots of varieties of plant species are found over here, over 64. Some of the most commonly found plant species in this region are Goran, Genwa, Dhundal, Garjan, Kankra, Sundari and Passur.

How to reach Sunderban in West Bengal


By air the nearest airport is the Dum-Dum airport at Kolkata. This airport is nearly 166km away from Sunderbans. Tourists pre-paid taxis one can get there at Kolkata to reach Sunderbans.

By train Canning railway station is the nearest railhead from Sunderbans. It is 48 kms away from the Sunderbans. Bt all major trains stop at Howrah which is approximately 100 kms away from Sunderbans.
By bus also the place is well linked with the other cities of West Bengal by the State Road Transport Corporation buses.
