The meaning of Nabadwip is nine islands. It is a town located in West Bengal. The circumference of this Nabadwip town is about thirty miles. This place is a part of the Mayapur township. There are about 185 temples in and around Nabadwip and this place is famous for the temples present here. All the nine islands mean something particular.

The nine islands in Nabadwip are Antardvipa (Mayapur) for surrendering everything, Simantadvipa for patient hearing, Godrumadvipa for chanting, Madhyadvipa for perfect remembering, Koladvipa for serving the lotus feet, Ritudvipa for ideal worshipping, Jahnudvipa for praying unconditionally, Modadrumadvipa for serving as a servant and Rudradvipa for being a friend.

During the 12th Century A.D Nabadwip was the erstwhile capital of Bengal. It is the Birth Place of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The place is also renowned for this and there are many followers who visit this birth place of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. There are many activities in this region undertaken by the ISKON.

Places to see in Nabadwip, West Bengal


The most interesting place to see in Nabadwip is the Sonargouranga. This temple is dedicated to Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and there is also a gold statue of Shri Chaitanaya and is one of the Best places to visit in Nabadwip.

Yogapitha is also a place to see in Nabadwip as it is the center location of Nabadwip islands and this is the place Lord Chaitanya took birth.

Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math, Navadvipa. is a sacred shrine dedicated to Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and it is in the Nabadwip Dham. It was built in the year 1941. This place is established by Srila Sridhar Maharaja known as Om Vishnupad Sri Srila Bhakti Rakshak Sridhar Maharaj. This place is open from 4 a.m to 1 p.m and 4 p.m to 9 p.m.

The Radharani temple is situated in the holy city of Nabadwip. The temple is dedicated to Radha, the consort of Lord Krishna. In this temple there is an idol of Radha Rani and it is marvelous and it is decorated with many jewels and flowers. You can here the chanting of Bhajans in this temple all through out the day. The poornima day is the best day to visit this temple.

Shri Mahaprabhu Temple is also a great place to visit in Nabadwip. It is located at the Srivasa Angan. It is believed to be the birth place of Harinama-sankirtana. This temple is very close to Yogapitha. The temple is having three different Shrines. All the three diffrent shrines are dedicated to different lords. It is open from 8.30am to 11am and 3.30pm to 8.30pm.

Nabadwip by air - The nearest airport is the Kolkata international airport and it is at a distance of 130 km from Nabadwip. This airport is well connected to all the airports of the country and there are regular flights to and from this place. From this airport you can hire a cab as well as a prepaid taxi to Nabadwip.

Nabadwip by train - There is a railway station at Nabadwip and train journey is the most efficient one. As one can reach this place just in 2 hours from Howrah from the Jana Satabdi express.
