Braille ballot papers in West Bengal Bidhan Sabha election 2011
The chief electoral officer has announced that special arrangements will be made to make the voting process for blind or visually challenged citizen easy. In the coming West Bengal assembly election 2011 the persiding officers will have special ballot papers in Braille to assist the visually impaired voters. This technique will help the visually challenged voters to remember the sequence of symbols before entering the enclosure. This way they could press the button with the symbol they want without anyone's help and their right to privacy will be intact; also any chances of intentional misguiding can be avoided. More than 3% of West Bengal's population are physically challenged and 46% of them are visually impaired. After this introduction of braille ballots in West Bengal assembly election 2011 and special instructions to the presiding officers, hopefully these voters will be able to vote without any problems.
This arrangement is a result of different claims made by different organiztions in the past to make arrangements for the impaired and challenged voters. Claims included polling booths to be kept on ground floors for physically challenged and partially able voters, keeping the EVM on a height that a person on a wheelchair can cast their vote without problems etc. Though all problems have not been solved yet still it is a good news that blinded or visually challenged voters will get a fair chance to vote in the coming West Bengal assembly election.
