History of Darjeeling Tea Estates:
Dr. Campbell, a civil surgeon of India Medical Service began the plantation of Tea in Darjeeling in 1841. In 1839 Campbell came to Darjeeling then initially he started the experimental Tea plantation with China seeds. This experimental practices was continued by him and others till 1840. After establishment of small Tea nurseries during that time by the Government Tea plantation took a new structure of Commercial exploitation in 1850. For discussing the problems of Darjeeling Tea Estates the first annual general meeting of the Darjeeling planters Association was organised in 1873. In 1892 it was named as Darjeeling planters Association.
But in 1910 it was allied to the Indian Tea Association as I T A. After dissolving the Darjeeling Branch of the Indian Tea Association in 1951 "Darjeeling planters Association" was formed under the wellstand chairmanship of Mr. S.K.Basin to make a sole independent Association and after this Darjeeling planters Association got an important step in the Consultative Committee of Plantation Association as CCPA in India. Hill Tea Estate, Kumai Tea Estate and Kurseong Tea Estate. Happy Valley Tea Estate of Darjeeling:
The 1854's establishment Happy Valley Tea Estate is a best Tea cultivation ground in Darjeeling district. For the first time in 1860 an Englishman, David Wilson had started cultivation of Tea here and named this Wilson Tea Estate. Happy Valley had hot its name by an Indian planter named Tarapada Banerjee by merging Windsor Tea Estate with this in 1929. This is a superb Tea cultivation sight for tourist to enjoy the scenic beauty as has stood from 80yrs.
This Tea Estate is situated just lower to the Hill cart road in the Darjeeling East Valley which is only 3 kms away from Darjeeling town. The total area covered by this well-spreaded Tea Estate is 111 hectares. It is open from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm for the visitors. Visitors can enjoy the scenery of plucking and processing of Tea in between the month of April to November here. Tourist can take a magnificient look of the Mt. Kanchenjunga near the Happy Valley Tea Estate. This Tea Estate helps to produce the World class Darjeeling Tea. Puttabong Tea Estate of Darjeeling:
Puttabong Tea Estate with the other name Tukvar Tea Estate is awesome to see its beautifull Tea plantation area. This is the first Tea Estate in Darjeeling built in 1852. It contains mainly clonal and Chinese bushes. It is well spreaded upto 22 kms ending to the Rungeet river. Puttabong Supreme and Puttabong Tea Queen are the products from this Tea Estate.
This area has good lodging fascility for the tourists. It is one of the best tourist destination as a heaven for Indian Birds. It was the first receiver of ISO 9002 certficate in manufacturing, plantation and marketing of tea. More over various kinds of rivers, lake, flora and fauna are increasing the attraction of this place for tourists also.
