Marundeeswarar temple


Sri Marundeeswarar temple situated in South Chennai in Thiruvanmiyur is about 1300 years old. This deity is also known as Aushadeeswarar (Aushadha means medicine) and Valmikanathar. It is believed that the epic poet Sri Valmiki worshipped this deity and was blessed by the Lord. The Thiyagaraja –Somaskanda manifestation of Lord Shive is enshrined in this temple. The two famous saivite saints Appar and Sambandar had visited this temple and sung about the glories of the Lord .

Marundeeswarar means the divine physician is the presiding deity of this temple. There is a separate shrine nearby for Thripurasundari the consort of Lord Shiva . Two small shrines are there for Sri Ganapthy and Sri Subramanya. Also there is a shrine for the poet saint Thyagaraja .

The temple is situated in a land of about one acre. There are two Raja gopurams (five tiered) on the eastern and western entrances. The main deity Marundeeswarar is seen facing west. There are two spacious mandapams housing Sri Marundeeswarar and Sri Thiyagarajar. About 36 massive pillars adorn the Thiyagaraja mandapam with decorative carvings.

Marundeeswarar is worshipped in the form of Shiva Linga of about one and half feet high. Inside the Mahamandapam the images of the 63 saivite saints (Nayanmars) are found. Besides this you can see 108 Shiva Lingams here and five massive Lingams representing the five elements.

Four services are offered to the deity at 7.30, 11.30 a.m and 5 p.m and 9 p.m. These are known as Kalasanthi pooja,Uchikalam, Sayarathachai and Ardhajamam. Temple is open from 6 a.m to 11.30 a.m and 4 p.m to 9 p.m.

Important festivals are Brahmotsavam celebrated in March –April and Thiruvadirai during Dec-Jan months. Vanni tree is the sacred tree here. Five sacred tanks or thirthams are associated with this temple .They are Papanasini, Janmanasini,Kamanasini, Gnanadayini, and Mokshadayini out of which Gnanadayini ceased to exist. Kamanasini and Mokshadayini are in the form of wells. Janmanasini is the temple tank situated near eastern tower. Papanasini is a massive tank which is a little away from this.

It is said that the Sun and the Moon,perform puja at this temple every evening. Unlike other Siva temples, this temple does not have a Navagrahas shrine because the Sun and Moon are in prayer mode here. The main "lingam" which is Swayambu,is also called as"Palvannanathan" because Kamadhenu, the divine cow, used to constantly shower him with milk.
