Semmozhi Poonga, literally meaning the Classical Language Park, is the all new botanical garden established by the Horticulture Department of the Government of Tamilnadu, on 24th November 2010. The location of Sem Mozhi Poonga Chennai is near the Anna flyover in Chennai. It is located in the Cathedral Road-Anna Salai junction, just opposite to the American Consulate, on the erstwhile Drive-in Woodlands Hotel. The total area of the this botanical garden is more or less 20 acres, while the cost to set up this park was more than 80 million rupees. There are lots of biological specimens here. More than 500 species of plants and 80 trees were already there while this park was being developed, and some of them are as aged as 100 years. The garden takes pride in hosting some of the most exotic flora and rare plant species, medicinal and aromatic herbs, which have greater values than being only elements of aesthetic pleasure. Most of them are imported from foreign countries, including China and Thailand. There is also a plethora of bonsai varieties of Ficus, Microcarpa and Ficus Ginseng.

History of Semmozhi Poonga Chennai Language Park

The area of Semmozhi Poonga Chennai was previously the location of the well-known Woodlands Drive-In restaurant. However, in the early 1989, the Tamilnadu Government had decided to do away with the restaurant, which resulted in the final closure of the same roughly two decades later on 12 April 2008. The land was handed over to the government and steps were taken to build up the Semmozhi Poonga Classical Language Park in Chennai.

The Semmozhi Poonga garden in Chennai boasts a plethora of indigenous species spread across 22 exclusive areas. The different areas in the garden include palm court, tree court, golden garden, rock garden, butterfly garden, fern garden, theme garden and so on. The garden also hosts a wide number of exotic herbal species. There is also a Cascade garden at the fag end of the park. There is an arch near the entrance plaza which stands as a unique feature of the botanical park. A vertical garden, with an inbuilt irrigation and drain system for easy maintenance, this section is 22 feet long and 14 feet, and it adds to the scenic beauty of this park greatly. There is also a high monolithic structure, with a height of about ten feet, with 'Semmozhi Poonga' carved upon, for welcoming the visitors.

Semmozhi Poonga Chennai Botanical Garden Entry Timings Parking Fees

Semmozhi Poonga Chennai is the new botanical garden set up by the Horticulture Department of the Government of Tamilnadu near the Anna Flyover. The garden is located in the Cathedral Road-Anna Salai junction, opposite to the American Consulate. On December 1, 2010, the Government of Tamilnadu decided that the botanical garden entry fees will be Rs. 5 per adult and free for children. The park will remain open for morning walkers from from 6 am and 8 am. For others tourists and visitors, the park will remain open from 10 am and 8 pm. However, the garden timings can be altered later. There is an open auditorium available within the poonga which can be hired to organize programmes and functions for Rs 15,000 per day. Please note that the Horticulture Department of Tamilnadu Government has strictly forbidden the use of all kinds of plastic materials, foods and beverages within and around the park.

The parking fees will be Rs. 5 for two-wheelers for the first three hours. For four wheelers, it would be Rs. 10. For every additional hour after those first three hours, an additional amount of Rs 5 will be charged. For maxi cabs and vans, the initial parking fee for three hours is Rs 25 and an additional Rs 25 for every one hour after those three hours.
