Land of Mahabharata – Kurukshetra in Haryana
Kurukshetra is one of the famous pilgrimages not only in Haryana but also in India. Kurukshetra is the place where the great battle of Mahabharata took place for 18 days between Kaurvas and Pandavas. Lord Krishna played a great role in Mahabharata and also gave the knowledge of Hindu holy book Bhagwat Gita to Arjuna as written in Maharbharata. There are about 360 holy places in Kuruklshetra related to Mahabharata. Kurukshetra is a beautiful place and should be visited at least once in lifetime of a person.
Every year during November and December religious ceremonies took place here at Brahamsrovar. Also on the occasions of Solar Eclipses and Lunar Eclipses people take religious bath here at Brahamsarovar and also do Pooja and Aarti etc.
Location of Kurukshetra
Kurukshetra is located on the National Highway (NH-1) from Ambala to Chandigarh. Kurukshetra is located on the both sides of the NH-1. The famous Kurukshetra University is also located here at Kurukshetra.
Other places to visit in and around Kurukshetra
Brahma Sarovar is one of the holiest places of Kurukshetra. It a holy tank of water and inn the centre of the tank there is a temple of Sarveshwar Mahadev which looks like a lotus flower in the holy tank. As per legends it is believed that the Earth was conceived here by Lord Brahama the creator. On the occasions of festivals, religious days and eclipses etc many religious activates are performed here. The Sarovar is a home for many Sadhus and Mahatmas. Taking bath in the Brahama Sarovar is equal to performing Ashwamedha Yagna. All the sins of the person taking bath here are washed. A must visit place for everyone.
Sannihit Sarovar is another holy tank of sacred water in Kurukshetra situated at a distance of about 1 km from Braham Sarovar. As per legends If the water of the tank is collected Fromm this holy tank on Amavasya the total dark night the sins of the people will be over. Since then the many religious ceremonies are performed on this day. Also the place is also famous for Kumbh Mela when many people take the religious bath here. The temples of Lord Hanuman and Lord Dhruva Narayan and his mother Goddess Durga are places here.
Thanesar is a famous Hindu pilgrimage. The temple is famous for Sthanesvar Mahadev temple on whose name the place is named. Also Bhadra Kali temple is situated here at Thanesar. As per legends the Shiva Linga was first worshiped here. Also it is believed that Guru Parshuram killed many Ksahtriyas here and Kuru also worshiped and medidated here. Kuru was the ancestor of Pandavas and Kaurvas. The place was ruled by King Harsha for about 41 years and started ruling from the age of 16. The famous Chinese traveller Huen Sang liver here for many years.
Pehowa is located at a distance of about 14kms from Thanesar. The place derivers its name from King Prithu who on the death of his father offered water to the visitors at the bank of river Saraswati. Pheowa is the holy place where Pind Daan a religious ceremony performed after the death of a person is performed and also other religious ceremonies are performed here at Pheowa to grant Moksha to the ancestors.
Ban Ganga is situated about 12kms from Kurukshetra. As per legend, during Mahabharata when Bhishma lay wounded on the death bed of arrows he felt thirsty and Arjun brought water for him through his arrow. The holy water bought by him for Bhishma to satisfy his thirst is known as Ban Ganga and is worshiped here at Bhishma Kund.
Jyotisar is another holy place in Kurukshetra situated at a distance of about 12kms from Kurukshetra. The place is treated to the source of light and inspiration. Jyoti sr is the birth place of holy book of Hindus Bhagwat Gita. The marble idols of Lord Krishna explaining Gita Updesh to Arjuna are also present here.
