History and Culture of Mumbai


Mumbai is famous for some of its unique things. Ganpati puja in Mumbai, Chal in Mumbai are some specialty of Mumbai.

Prior to urbanization,Mumbai was not very crowded. And it provided employment to lot of people of Maharashtra through cloth mills. And it was the boon for many workers as it provided them with food and shelter.
Also there was culture of "Chal" popularly known in Marathi. "Chal" means a collection of very small houses joint side by side.This arrangement can't be as lavish and comfortable as in today's world.But there was a lot of affection and care in between the people there.The city was a backbone of common middle class man.The description of the day-to-day life of Mumbai in 1960's is well pictured in the famous drama "Batatyachi Chal" by P.L.Deshpande,an outstanding writer in Maharashtra.
Mumbai also has a history of festivals long ago.The biggest festival of Maharashtra, "Ganeshotsav" was started by Lokmanya Tilak in Mumbai in 1912.
Lalbag has a special place in Maharashtra because of its "Manacha Ganpati".
