Tourism in Tinsukia District of Assam

History of Tinsukia

The legend history says that the District had the ancient name of Tinsukia i.e Bangmara. Initially it was known as Changmai Pathar and was also the capital of Kingdom named Muttack. This famous Bangmara town was established by King Sarbananda Singha with his minister Gopinath Barbaruah as an assistant of the King. Tinsukia District was declared as the 23rd district of Assam with its three sub divisions namely Tinsukia, Sadiya and Magherita(Sadar) on 1st October, 1989.

Tinsukia District basically consists of several rivers and reserve forests. Brahmaputra River is the major rivers flowing through the district with Lohit River, Dibru River and Buri Dehing River. The major tourists attraction of Tinsukia includes Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, Buridehing Reserve Forest, Tarani Reserve Forest, Duarmara Reserve Forest, Lokhipathar Reserve Forest, Kakojan Reserve Forest, Tokowani Reserve Forest and Phillobari Reserve Forest, Margherita, Rukmini Island, Bherjan-Borjan-Padumoni Wildlife Sanctuary, Bell Temple and more. Dibru-Saikhowa National Park

Dibru-Saikhowa National Park is a superb sightseeing of the world, situated at about 13 km away from Tinsukia. This national park is mainly famous for the feral horses. The park has covered a huge area with some wetland, partly grassland and dense forests. It also houses to some endangered White Winged Wood Duck, Gangetic Dolphin, Water Buffalo, Slow Loris, Elephant etc.

Bherjan-Borjan-Padumoni Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the awesome wildlife sanctuary of Assam is palced at a distance of only 6 km from Tinsukia. A huge species of primates including rare Hoolock Gibbon are the major attraction for the visitors.

Digboi Refinery of Digboi

Digboi Refinery is the first oil town of Asia, for the first time oil well was drilled commercially in September 1889 here. It was the only refinery till the India's independence and now it is famous as the oldest operating oil refinery in the whole world. Moreover, Digboi also has one major tourist attraction, the first oil museum in India. Visitors can see the 18-hole Golf Course in Digboi. It has a gigantic scenic beauty for the tourist.

Rukmini Island

Covering an area of around 3.25 sq km, this famous beach island is located in the midst of Brahmaputra River. It often houses to many indigenous and migratory birds. With a heart touching scenic beauty of sand this place is a perfect holiday destination.


Margherita is one of the main sub-divisional headquarters of Tinsukia Districtwhich is famous as the Coal Queen of Assam. The first plywood factory was founded on 1924 in Margherita, also famous for plywood products. Tourist can be able to see the process of making tea and a plywood factory will be a memorable experience. A beautiful Golf Course also raises the importance of Margherita.
