Introduction to Kinnaur District in Himachal Pradesh

Kinnaur is a very beautiful district of Himachal Pradesh inhabited by maximum percentage of tribal population. Two rivers flow through Kinnaur district. One is Sutlej that enters India from Tibet and divides Kinnaur into two parts. Another river in Kinnaur is the Spiti that enters in Sutlej at Khab. The most interesting geographical fact related to Kinnaur district is that two of the world's greatest mountain ranges called the Zanskar and Greater Himalayas holds in Kinnaur district.

Going back to the history, it is believed that the 'Pandavas' of 'Mahabharata' spent several years of their exile in the regions of Kinnaur district. Once Kinnaur was also a part of the princely state of Bushahr. Today Kinnaur has turned out to be one of the most beautiful districts of Himachal Pradesh. Recong Peo serves as the headquarter of Kinnaur district. Kinnaur covers an area of approximately 6,401 kilometres and having a population of 85,000 persons. Agriculture and horticulture are the basic occupation of the local people in Kinnaur. Kinnaur is famous for its delicious apples, holy temples and various religious places. The famous peak Kinner Kailash in Kinnaur has its own religious importance. Kinner Kailash is situated at a chilling height of 6,050 metres above the sea level. It is believed that the summit of Kinner Kailash where stands a 79 foot tall rock, is the abode of Lord Shiva. The strange fact about this 79 foot rock at Kinner Kailash, worshipped as Shiv Linga, is that it changes its color with the changing light of the day. Devotees trek to Kinner Kailash to pay homage to Lord Shiva during summer season.
