Fisheries in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is blessed with vast and variegated fishery resources in the shape of networks of rivers, sprawling reservoirs, high altitude lakes harboring wide array of temperature, sub-temperate and tropical fish species. Mainly classified into rivers, latchstring, recreation and pond fisheries, the state water offers considerable potential for the development of fisheries. About 12,000 fishermen families in the Pradesh depend directly and indirectly on this occupation and earn their livelihood by fishing. During 2008-09, maximum thrust was given in the expansion and renovation of crap and trout farms of the state so as to boost the seed production in the reservoirs. A total of 21.32 million crap seed was produced in the state farms till December, 2009. The work on construction and remodeling of fish seed farms at Sultanpur, Holi, Barot, Nagni, and Nalagarh remained in progress. The Indo Norewegian Trout project farm, Patlikuhl has attained the distinction of first farm of the country where commercial production for sale of trout was initiated. During the year, for the first time successful breeding and striping operation of reared rainbow trout was undertaken at this farm. Self employment was provided to 725 persons by the department under three schemes viz., Fish Cart, Reservoir Fisheries and Aqua Culture. Three lakh eyed ova where stripped in the various fish farms of the state. The production from Gobindsagar and Pong reservoir of the state alone was 968 tones valuing over Rs. 257.00 lakh.
