Varalakshmi Vratam is on Aug 20th, 2010 . This falls on the Friday that comes after Aadi Amavasya or Aavani Amavasya. With this the start of the festival season has begun as the next will be Onam, Raksha Bandan, Ganesh Chaturthi, Janmashtami, Dassera and Deepavali.. so on.

Varalakshmi Vratam Puja

Varalakshmi Vratam is observed the last friday before the Shravan Poornima or th full moon day. During this Vratam / festival married women's be fasting in order to bring good health, properity to their family members.

This vratam is described completely in the Skanda Purana of Lord Shiva.

What women do on the Vratam dayVaralakshmi Vratam Puja

On Varalakshmi Puja Day, the house is cleaned and decorated with colors and flowers. Rangoli designs are made in the house premises and in front of the "mandapa" which is set for the puja.

The puja starts with Ganesh offering and then Goddess Lakshmi is presented in a Kalasa which is made of gold or copper. The pot is filled with rice or water and decorated with mango leaves, flowers and coconut places on the top.

  • turmeric powder, sandal, kumkum, beetelnut-10, supari, bananas-1 dozen, coconut-2, agarbathi, camphor, thread for lighting lamp, flowers, mixed flowers, garland, mangoleaves -1, banana leaves-2, rice-1/2 kg, ,ingelly oil, ghee, milka, pradhimai-(face of god), stool, small banana ,tree-4

  • This holy pot is placed in "mandala" (a drawing / rangoli) drawn for the puja with some paddy and rice forming the base. Then a idol of Lakshmi is placed and puja is done with sacred yellow thread. One thread is offered to the Goddess and second is tied on the hand of the women is fasting or "Vrata".

    With this there are many other religious puja happens as Mahalakshmi AaAstakam", Devi slokas, Devi strotras and women are invited and presented with Coconut and flowers.

    On this day women prepare very traditional recipes.

    Varalakshmi is form of Goddess lakshmi with tow lotus in her two hands and Abhaya and varada mudras shown for other two hands.
