History of Crawford Market

Crawford Market is famous for its architecture. The market building was constructed in the year 1869 and named as Crawford Market. The architecture of this building is a perfect blend of Gothic and Norman architecture. The carved embellishments that are found on the top of the building and the stone fountains seen inside the market are said to have been designed by Lockwood Kipling (Famous novelist Rudyard Kipling's father).

The market is spread over an area of 24000 sq. ft roughly. Redstone is widely used in the overall construction which was specially called from Bassein. Originally during the British rule, the place was named as Crawford Market, after the first Municipal Commissioner of the City, Mr. Arthur Crawford. But after independence, the market was renamed as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai. However even after the market was renamed it remained popularly known as Crawford Market.

How to reach Crawford Market

Crawford Market is located right opposite to the Mumbai Police Headquarters in the South Mumbai. The Crawford Market or the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market is located to the north of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Railway Station. It is merely five minutes from the station. Many buses ply regularly to this market from each and every part of the city.

Earlier Crawford Market was the main wholesale market, but later on this wholesale market was shifted to Navi Mumbai. But still today it remains a wholesale market for many items like fruits, vegetable, poultry, cosmetics, dry fruits, imported items, toys, gift articles, leather items and many more though not on a very large scale.
