Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is the best tourist attraction of Tamilnadu. It is located in the Kancheepuram District of Tamil Nadu and is spread over 70 acres of land and is one of the oldest sanctuaries in India. This Vedanthangal bird sanctuary is situated about 75 km from Chennai city and is popularly called as "home for migratory birds". It is also a good place for ornithologist, a zoologist who studies about birds, who camp here for observing the birds.

The Vedanthangal lake bird sanctuary was a small lake in the end of the 18th century and the ancient people living in and around Vedanthangal lake bird sanctuary has a practice of protecting the birds which come flying here from all around the world. They protected the birds since the excreta of the birds act as fertilizers. The Britishers shot the birds in the lake and so the people gave a complaint to the collector of Chengalpet Lionel Palace and he passed the orders for protecting the birds. The lake was recognized as a sanctuary in the year 1936 by the collector. Under the Madras Forest Act the place was announced as the reserved forest and after 10 years the place was declared as a wildlife sanctuary. A rest house was built and thousands of trees were planted after this declaration as a wildlife sanctuary.
