Chinmoy Guha, an eminent Professor of English at the University of Calcutta as well as a renowned French Scholar, was born on 10th September, 1958. Having finished his schooling from Jagabandhu Institution, Kolkata, he joined the St Xavier's College, Kolkata, to pursue his honours graduation in English. This was an epoch making incident since Chinmoy Guha here came across Professor Purushottam Lal, a great scholar of English as well as of French literature.
In a class lecture by Professor Purushottam Lal of William Shakespeare's play Henry the Fifth, Chinmoy Guha was mesmerized by the beauty of the French language as the professor read out a French passage from the aforesaid play. Later, the famour French scholar cum poet Arun Mitra was Chinmoy Guha's primary inspiration for learning French. While starting to learn French at the Ramakrishna Mission Institure of Culture, Golpark, Kolkata, Chinmoy Guha could hardly imagine that Jacques Derrida himself will praise him for his French abilities in future. Or an Egyptian flower vendor residing in France for three generations will give all his roses to Chinmoy Guha, so amazed was he at his French pronunciation.
Having completed his graduation from the St Xavier's College, Kolkata, Chinmoy Guha completed his postgraduation in English from the University of Calcutta, Kolkata. Later, he completed his Ph. D. on T. S. Eliot from the Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Dealing with the influence of great French poets and thinkers on the poetry of T. S. Eliot, this work was later published in the book form from Papyrus Publications, Kolkata, under the title of Where the Dreams Cross (2000). This received high appreciation all over the world, including the exalted appraisal of Sir Frank Kermode.
Professor Chinmoy Guha has taught for several years at Alias Française de Calcutta. At the beginning of his teaching career he taught as the Vijaygarh College, Kolkata, before enjoying the readership and then professorship at the University of Calcutta, Department of English. Meanwhile, he has also served as the Director of Books and Publications Division, Embassy of France in India, New Delhi.
Chinmoy Guha has composed as much as 15 books in Bengali, English and French. He is mostly known as a translator, translating from foreign languages into Bengali. Chinmoy Guha's most famous translation works include:

2. La Rochefoucauld's Maxims
3. Gustave Flaubert's Le Dictionnaire des idées reçues as Aahaammaker Abhidhaan
Professor Chinmoy Guha has been awarded many honours. The most notable of them has been the Knighthood from the French Government (Le Ordre des Palmes Académiques) which has been conferred on him on 1st April, 2010. He resides at Bullygaunge at present.
