Date of Birth: 23rd January 1934. Barun Sengupta was born in Barisal, now in Bangladesh and moved to Kolkata before the partition on 1947.
Education: B.M.School, Dhaka, Town School Kolkata and City College, Kolkata. He was a commerce graduate.Career As Journalist
Before joining Anandabazar Patrika as a reporter in 1960, a daily news paper in Bengali he founded a periodical named Bhabikal and another weekly named Bartaman. Once he was a member of Forward Bloc and was very close to Ashok Ghosh and late Hemanta Bose. As a reporter he gained huge popularity and became political correspondent in 1965. During Emergency period in India people of Bengal used to wait eagerly to read Barun Sengupta's column in Anandabazar Patrika. His Own Daily Bartaman
In 1984 Barun Sengupta left Anandabazar Patrika and launched his own daily Bartaman. At present Bartaman is just behind Anandabazar so far as readership and circulation is concerned. Two more periodicals – Saptahik Bartaman and Sukhi Grihokon are also under this group and very much popular. Bartaman Patrika is now available in internet also. As A Journalist
Barun Sengupta used to write in an earthy and informal style which touches common people. His uncompromising anti-establishment stand was welcomed by people. During emergency period in 1975 he was in jail for 9 months. He had close relationship with most of the political leaders of all parties. He never used the relationship for his personal gain and never stopped writing against any leader whenever any wrong was found with the leader.
Barun Sengupta died on 19th June 2008 at the age of 74 after a prolonged illness in a nursing home in Kolkata.
