Introduction to Kolkata

The capital of West Bengal formerly known as Calcutta, now it is renamed as Kolkata. Kolkata is the eastern part of India and located on the bank of River Hooghly. The city is very busy and energetic. It is also the place of famous Poets, writers, freedom fighters, musicians and saints. Still the majestic Trams are seen on Kolkata road. There are numerous tea shops around the corner, strangers are discussing political events, cricket matches, all in all it is very lively place to be and can be a destination for excellent travel experience.

Transport mechanism of Kolkata

Air Transport: The city has only one airport named after Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at Dum Dum in north kolkata. It operates both domestic and International flights from here. The city of joy is well connected by air with all major cities of India and other countries too. Different air carriers operate to and from kolkata like Air India, Indian Airlines, Jet Airways,Indigo, Air France, Japan Airlines, British Airways, Royal Nepal Airlines, Biman Bangladesh, Thai Airways etc.

Public Transport: Kolkata suburban railway, Kolkata Metro, trams and buses are the main public transport facility available. It has two major railway stations at Howrah and Sealdah. All surrounding local trains are available from these stations. Country's north and west bound trains are majorly connected with Howrah where Sealdah is busy in operating West Bengal's northern part like Siliguri, New Jalpaiguri though local trains are also available. The Kolkata Metro is the oldest underground transport system in India. It connects north and south part of the city and runs parallel to Hooghly River. Now the Tram network is only found in Kolkata in the whole India, though it moves very slow but very joyous experience all together. The network of Trams is restricted to certain areas now and also became a heritage. Like other city here also buses are the most preferred transportation runs all parts of the city. Both Govt. and private owners run their buses. The yellow metered ambassador kind of taxi and auto is the hired form of transports. Hand pulled rickshaws and normal rickshaws are also used by public for short distance.

Water Transport: West Bengal has two docs, one is Kolkata doc and other is Haldia doc. Both are managed by Kolkata Port Trust. The city's Kolkata Doc has the services to Port Blair and Andaman Nicobar Islands. Indian Shipping Corporation also provides cargo ship services from here to other ports of India and Abroad along with it has several ferry services between Kolkata and Howrah.

Climate of Kolkata

Kolkata is very humid kind of city wet-and-dry. The summer season is very hot and humid. The lowest temperature is 30°C and highest temperature is 40°C in May-June. In winter the temperature drops to 9°C and tends to last only between December and January. During summer dusty squalls followed by thunderstorm are very common and also brings relief to humid condition. This is also known as Kal Baisakhi.

September - March is best suited to plan holiday in Kolkata. Because in between these months the weather is very pleasant, not so humid and not so cold.
