History of the Birla Academy of Art and Culture
Birla Academy of Art and Culture was established in the year 1967, with a main aim of fostering the growth of art and culture with emphasis on visual and performing arts. This Academy is located at the Southern Avenue, in the heart of the city of Kolkata. Sri and smt Birla the famous and well known industrialists of India, had started collecting rare and valuable treasures of art, whenever they had a chance to see them, out of their profound love for art and the beauty of those works of art. When the collections became large it was decided to showcase these in a place where it would be accessible to one and all, who wanted to know more about the cultural heritage of India. a public charitable trust was readied to keep the collection going as well as to preserve and exhibit them for the public.
The present place was established in the year 1966 and was inagurated by Karan Singh in the year 1967 as the Birla Academy of Arts and Culture. The main activities as planned of the Birla Academy was to collect, preserve and display of the Art objects in the museum, to host exhibitions of Indian and international importance, Organize cultural performances and conduct educational programmes of different and varied natures.
The museum has its own character and depicts the growth and development of the Indian art from 1st century BC till the present day. The museum contains works by many celebrated Indian Artists as well as a few specimens of the western art. There is a garden near te Birla Academy which is usually used for open air expositions, art fairs and cultural performances connected with the Academy.
The Academy also holds Educational programmes like lectures, seminars, film shows, workshops and art appreciation classes. The Academy has a library with an impressive collection of art books, journals and periodicals for the use of the public. Achievements of the Birla Academy
there have been the presentation of a few international exhibitions, of which some are notable ones namely the show of the French Sculptor rodin, the works of Henry Moore and the Graphics of Picasso.The Academy has also hosted Russian festival shows, German Expressionist's graphics, French designs and also American, Chinese and British porcelains.
