Legendary Rabindra Sangeet singer Suchitra Mitra is dead
Rabindra Sangeet singer Suchitra Mitra died today January 3, 2011 at her residence. She died at about 1.30 p.m due to cardiac attack.
Death of Suchitra Mitra is the end of an era in Rabindra Sangeet. For the last six decades Rabindra Sangeet without Suchitra Mitra was unthinkable. At the early age, she was under the guidance of Pankaj Mullick. Suchitra Mitra joined Sangeet Bhavan of Viswa Bharati just 20 days after the death of Rabindranath Tagore. At Sangeet Bhavan she was under the guidance of Indiradebi, Shantidev Ghosh and Shailajaranjan Mazumdar. She first recording was released in 1945.

Her first love was definitely Rabindra Sangeet but she has recorded songs of Atul Prasad and Dwijendralal Roy and modern Bengali songs. She was a member of Indian Peoples Theatre (IPTA) and visited rural areas of West Bengal although she kept herself far away from politics. She was interested in acting also. From her childhood she was in touch with this art as eminent Bengali cinema personalities like Pramathesh Barua, Debaki Basu, Sisir Kumar Bhaduri were regular visitors at their house. She acted in Rituparno Ghosh's Bengali film Dahan. She was former sheriff of Kolkata in 2001.
