I bought onions for Rs 48 a kg both yesterday and today. I was under the impression that the price would fall after the income tax raids on those hoarding onions while buying vegetables at Burdwan town(Kalna Gate Market) on Sunday morning. Please don't argue with suburban retailers

According to retailers, the price(Rs. 60/-) has not come down as the wholesalers at Koley market and Posta market had been charging the same as last week.

At this time of the year, Calcutta is completely dependent on the supply of onions from Nasik in Maharashtra. A reduction in price is possible only if there is steady supply from western India and at a reduced price," said Bholanath Saha, a trader at Lake Market.
At Gariahat market, onions were sold between Rs 65 and Rs 70 a kg on Saturday. On Sunday, onions were sold at Rs 60 per kg at Gariahat market.
The onions currently in the city markets reached Calcutta from Nasik at least three days ago and were bought at high rates.
Only 15 trucks of onions arrived in the city on Saturday against the required 50 trucks. Wholesalers at Posta market sold the new stock of onions to retailers at Rs 45 a kg, down from last week's Rs 55 a kg. Sunday being a holiday, the new consignment of onions were not distributed from wholesale markets.
"Till 50 trucks of onions start reaching the city every day, the prices will not come down," said Chinmoy De, a wholesale trader at Posta market. Very Poor quality onion for Whom?....another story.

The price is expected to fall after a fortnight even if the supply from Nasik does not improve much.
