Will the Left Front win the 2011 West Bengal Assembly Elections?
This article gives a brief analysis about the Left Front's prospects at the upcoming 2011 Bengals Assembly polls.
More youth and more women candidates will be representing the Left Front in the 2011 West Bengal Assembly polls. Quite a few of the young candidates standing for elections are from the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI). There are also a few from the Students' Federation of India (SFI).
In fact, even some of the ladies standing for elections are on the younger side. To be exact, there are 46 women candidates – a dozen more than those in the previous elections. The minority communities, too, have been given importance, with 57 Muslim candidates from the 64 total of candidates from the minorities groups.
It seems to have been a good decision on the part of the Left Front to stop 9 current Ministers from contesting the polls on the basis of them either not proving that they have done any significant work for the party in the State or for having some corruption charge against them. By dropping such Ministers, they are sending a message to the voters that only those who perform will be their representatives in power. So there are plenty of fresh new faces, many of them professionals and students.
All this shuffling has resulted in a change of candidates for no less than 149 seats! Naturally, the Trinamool Congress party officials are gleeful – they claim that it means that the Left Front is jittery of losing to them and this is no less than a big moral-boosting information for the Trinamool Congress. They are very confident of winning the elections and feel that three decades of Left Front rule is finally going to come to a close.
Nevertheless, after so many decades of rule, it does look like it will be tough to usurp power from them. After all, the Trinamool is in a seat-sharing alliance with the Congress & as of the date of this post, are still haggling over the sharing of seats. Not quite a good start to a supposedly strong bond to meet the firepower of the Left Front!
