1st meet in World cup cricket: Sri Lankan team was included in the World Cup cricket squard for the first time in 1979. In that world cup match, Sri Lanka beat India by 47 runs. The match was played at Old Trafford, Manchester. Sri Lanka scored 238 runs in 60 over while Indian team collapsed in 191 runs. Sri Lankan caption Duleep Mendis scored 64 runs in just 57 balls.

Kolkata crowd behaved rudely over poor situation of Indian team. Match referee Clive Llyod awarded the match to Sri Lanka. This day is a black day in West Bengal cricket history. After this incidence Eden Garden was banned for several years for hosting international cricket.

5th meet in World cup cricket: This world Cup cricket match was played at County Ground, Taunton in 1999 and India the match by 157 runs.

A record 318-run partnership between Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid in the second fetched the first victory of India against Sri Lanka in World Cup cricket.

Sourav Ganguly scored 183 and Rahul Dravid scored 145 runs.

6th meet in World cup cricket: This World Cup cricket match was played at New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg in 2003. The match ended with a huge 183 run victory of India. India scored 292 and Sri Lankan side were all out at 109 runs.

India scored 292 runs for 6 wickets with Sachin Tendulkar 97, Virender Sehwag 66 and Sourav Ganguly 48. Muthiah Muralitharan took 3 wickets for 46 runs.
Sri Lanka were all out at 109 in 23 overs. Javagal Srinath and Ashish Nehra both took 4 wickets each.

7th meet in World cup cricket: This World Cup cricket match was played at Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad in 2007 and Sri Lanka won the match by 69 run.

Sri Lanka scored 254 for 6 wickets with Upul Tharanga 64 and Chamara Silva 59.
In response India were all out at 185 in 43.3 overs. Rahul Dravid scored 60 runs.

Muthiah Muralitharan took 3 wickets for 41 runs.

ODI Records: Both the teams have played for 128 times against each other so far and India has 67 times and Sri Lanka 50 times. No result in 11 matches.
