The place named Bowbazar , in bengali means market of wife. This area was given as gift to the wife of the Motilal family, one of the oldest aristocrat families of calcutta. Biswanath Motilal was the first settled here after relocating from Joynagar.

4. Rishi Arobinda Ghosh lived here in Raja Subodh Mallick's Palace.
5. Sir C.V.Raman invented Raman Effect here in a house in B.B.Ganguly Street.
6. Nirmal Chandra used to stay here in his ancestral house at Nirmal Chandra Street.
7. First Tram in Kolkata ran from Sealdah to Dalhousie Square and Armenian Ghat.
8. Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar used to stay here when he came from Midnapore at Panchanantala area of Bowbazar.
