Kharagpur, the longest platform in the world


A railway station made before independence

Kharagpur railway station is the longest platform in this world. The total length is 1072 meters. It is the largest division in south eastern railway. The station was made before independence. Initially the length was 972 meters. Now they have increased it up to 100 meters more. Now a days you can arrange 3 express trains sequentially. Probably this is the only platform in India, which remain on for 24 hours. In the night also long-distant trains halts here. It is a very crucial station for south eastern railway as it is connected with all over India. This is the only junction through which you can go anywhere in India.

Now coming to the history - the first railway venture at Kharagpur was the rail link between Cuttack - Balasore - Kharagpur and from Sini to Kolaghat through Kharagpur. It was declared as a junction station in Railway map in 1898.
