Science City

The main motto behind the Science City of Kolkata is popularizing science. Science City was formed in the year 1997 on 1st July. Science City in Kolkata is the largest science center in the Indian subcontinent. The Science City of Kolkata is under the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM, Ministry of Culture and Government of India.
Science City, Kolkata is located at the crossing of Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and J B S Haldane avenue, Kolkata. The place has many galleries and lots of things to enjoy. It is a place specially built for the students but people of all age groups will enjoy here as there are unlimited interesting things to see and enjoy that can easily fill up one's mind. There are so many experiments and models to see in Science City in Kolkata that one will be forced to find the logic and principle behind it and this helps us to gather more knowledge and wisdom from that place.

Dynamotion Hall


Its a hall with many interactive exhibits and one can enjoy here the different scientific principles.
There is a permanent Exhibition on the world of Illusion and describes the experiment of motion and placement.
There is also a thing to watch Powers of Ten.
Fresh Water Aquarium is there with many varieties of dishes and there are about 26 tanks. It shows a wild variety of bio-diversity.
Live Butterfly enclave - It is a colony of live butterflies.

Earth Exploration Hall


This is a new introduction to the Science City Kolkata. The Earth Exploration hall at science city, Kolkata was inaugurated on 6 December, 2008 by Ambika Soni who is the union chief minister for culture of India. Here you can see a permanent exhibition on Earth. This exhibition has been houses in a two storied hemespherical building. This building displays the details and information of Southern Hemisphere on the ground floor and Northern Hemisphere on the 1st floor. There are also other informations about the earth like the physical geography, lands and people, flora and fauna and other dynamic natural phenomenon. These informations has been highlighted here using lots of new machines, new techniques like the attractive visuals, interactive multimedia, video walls, panoramic videos, tilting tables, computer kiosks and 3-D effects theatre wearing a special Polaroid spectacle has been applied here to explain the experiment.

Evolution Park


It is a large park type area or a large garden of area covering about 1300 square meter. Here you can see 71 robotic pre-historic animals 26 dinosaurs and 140 early plant model. This garden describes about the evolution of the animal and plant life especially of the extinct species such as the dinosaurs.

Space Odyssey


It is a Space theatre or planetarium. It is been equipped with the Helios Star Ball planetarium and this has been supported by 150 special effect projectors and Astrovision 10/70 Large format Film Projection system. This place has a sitting arrangement for about 360 people. There are immersive shows on science.

3d vision theater is present here where the visitors can experience 3d shows with the help of Polaroid spectacles.
Mirror magic is also an interesting thing where there are 35 exhibits based on the phenomenon of reflection of light.
Time machine - It is a 30 seater motion stimulator. It is really one of the best things here. It provides a virtual experience of space flight or journey to the space or a unknown world sitting in a casual maneuvered which is controlled by hydraulic motion control system.

Maritime Center


This depicts the maritime history of India. There are exhibits on navigational and shipping systems. There is also an unnamed Quiz corner here.


Science Park



Science city

Science park is a place where people come closer to the natural surroundings of them. They know about the science and natural principles behind the things around them, such as plants animals and other objects. The place is comprised of Caterpillar Ride, Gravity Coaster, Musical Fountain, Road Train, Cable Cars, Monorail Cycle, butterfly nursery and several exhibits on physical and life sciences and a maze set up in a lush green ambience. This Science park has become an integral part in all the centres of NCSM.

Some facilities at Science City, Kolkata


There are some other facilities too here.

  • Grand Theatre with a sitting capacity of around 2232 people and near about 100 performers can perform at a same time. It is the largest auditorium in the eastern India

  • Mini Auditorium is also there with a 392 people sitting capacity and 30 performers can perform at a time here.

  • There is also a large seminar hall with 11 different halls and it is an ideal venue for conferences, meetings, seminars and workshops.
