Saurav Chandidas Ganguly was the captain of Indian national cricket team was born on 8 July 1972 in Kolkata , west bengal. For his glorious performance to cricket world he is also known as Dada, Prince of a Kolkata, Bengal Tiger, and Maharaja also. He is a Left-handed batsman as well as a Right arm medium bowler. Most achievements in Test victories as India captain; more than 10,000 runs in ODI cricket; highest ODI score by an Indian in World Cup; first Indian captain to win a Test series in Pakistan. In October 2008, he was India's most successful Test captain to date, winning 21 tests out of 49 tests he captained and gloring India into the 2003 World Cup finals. Though he was asked to concentrate on his studies and not to play cricket, he was inspired to do so by his brother Snehasish Ganguly, an accomplished left-handed batsman for Bengal. He has to his credit the feat of having nurtured a number of efficient players who played under his Captainship. These include Virender Sahwag, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh among others. Ganguly announced that the Test series against Australia starting that month would be his last. Ganguly performed his last superb match on 21 December 2008. One anecdote was that during a tour with a junior team, it was Ganguly's turn to be the twelth man, a substitute who can only field and whose role is usually to raise morale by supporting the playing XI by arranging their spare equipment and drinks, and transfering messages from the dressing room to the players. Ganguly purportedly refused to do such tasks as he considered it beneath his social status to assist his teammates in such a way. Ganguly was also a hostile batsman of the world cup final in the year 2003. He has also appeared in the two hundred forty two first class matches.

In the year 1992 he started his One Day International (ODI) Cricket career with a match against West Indies. He made his Test debut at Lord's alongside Rahul Dravid, in umpire Dickie Bird's last Test. He scored a century, becoming only the third cricketer to score a century on debut at Lord's, after Harry Graham and John Hampshire. He shared a 255 run stand with Sachin Tendulkar, which became at that time the highest partnership for India against any country for any wicket outside India. Under his Captaincy the Indian Cricket team reached the finals of the World Cup Cricket 2003, where Australia beat India to win the championship. During the year 2000-2005. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2004, one of India's highest awards. In the Sahara Cup 1997, Saurav Ganguly set a new World Record for 5 consecutive Man of the Match Awards. He was also the Man of the Series. Ganguly played his last Test Cricket match against Australia in the year 2008, and scored 85 runs. He played his last ODI Cricket match against Pakistan on 15th of November 2007.

After India were knocked out of the tournament in the group stage, there were reports of a rift between certain members of the Indian team and their coach Greg Chappell. After Sachin Tendulkar issued a statement saying that what hurt the team most was that the coach has questioned our attitude, Chappell decided not to make his contract with the Indian team.

He was named the Captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders team in the IPL Twenty-20 Cricket tournament 2008. In a match played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals during the tournament IPL-1, Ganguly scored 51 runs off just 39 balls, which was his highest Twenty-20 Cricket score. In the cricket scenario of IPL-2,2011 Sourav ganguly has not secured any place in Kolkata Knight Riders.
