Sunderbans is a Bengali word and the meaning of the word Sunderbans is beautiful forests. Sunderbans are combined forests in Bangladesh and India and it is really very beautiful and the name matches to the beauty of the place. Sunderbans is the biggest mangrove forest in the world. It is also known as a treasure island of biodiversity. It has been declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sunderbans are in the South 24 Paraganas district of West Bengal and the part of the forest belonging to India is the Sundarbans National Park.
Total area of the Sunderbans is 38,500 sq km among which one third of the area is covered with water marsh areas. Since the year 1966 Sunderbans have been declared as a wildlife sanctuary and it mostly famous for the Royal Bengal Tigers found there.

It is estimated that there are about four hundred Royal Bengal Tigers at that place and about thirty thousand spotted dears. Sunderbans have a great variety of trees too found there and one of the most important among those trees are the Sundari trees. People say that the name of the place "Sunderbans has been derived from those Sundari trees. Sunderbans has got the unique natural beauty of surroundings. Royal Bengal Tigers are the king of these forests and this wild Tigers are majestic, cunning and merciless to its prey. Sunderbans is also the natural habitat for jungle fowl, giant lizards, spotted deer, wild boar, crocodiles and many more and all the Nature Lovers visit this place especially to have a close look to all these. The Siberian ducks migrate to this place which is also a reason for attraction for the tourists and some Nature lovers which is in some seasons only.

The main tourist point of the Sunderbans is Nilkamal which is also known as the Hiron Point and it is famous for have a look at the vociferous wild animals as well as the natural beauty.
Katka is also a good place to visit. Here the wild animals move freely and this place is a nice one for watching birds.

How to reach Sunderbans?

Sunderbans by air- The nearest airport is the Dum-Dum airport which is at a distance of 166 km from Sunderbans. This airport is at Kolkata and it is an international city. It is well connected to many cities in India as well as in abroad. You can get a taxi from here to reach to Sunderbans and the hire amount of a taxi to Sunderbans from Kolkata is nearly Rs 3500.

Sunderbans by train- Travelling by train is the cheapest way to travel to Sunderbans. Canning railway station is the nearest railway station from Sunderbans. This railway station is about 48 km away from the place, Sunderbans. From this place you can hire a taxi with a average hire charge of about Rs 1000. This railway station is well connected to Howrah and all the major station stops at Howrah. The station is around a distance of 100km from Howrah junction. There are also express and air conditioned railway facilities from Howrah to this station.

Sunderbans by bus- Sunderbans is well linked by the bus services and the place is well connected to all the major cities of Bengal. Most of the people use the bus or taxi service to reach to Sunderbans and there are luxury buses too for Sunderbans.


Seasons and Climate of Sunderbans.

The summers are very hot in Sunderbans while the winters in Sunderbans are pleasant in Nature. Summers are from March to May in Sunderbans and the temperature in Sunderbans rises to about 43 degree Celsius during the summers. Winters in Sunderbans are from November to February and the temperature during these days falls to around 10 degree Celsius.
Best time to visit Sunderbans is from November to March.
