Dr. Mani Bhaumik, inventor of LASIK procedure

Dr. Mani Bhaumik is a person known for his research on Laser. His invention has made LASIK surgery possible. But this Bengali has more potential into eastern spirituality.

While promoting his book "Code Name God" he compared himself to F. Scott Fitgerald's tragic character Jay Gatsby, who celebrated his rise from poverty to vast wealth by throwing a party for people whom he did not knew.

Mr. Mani Bhaumik is basically followed the same path, throwing huge parties at his Bel-Air home designed after Le Petite Trianon in the Gardens of Versailles.

But one day, he found himself alone after the guests went home. At that point his spiritual questions to himself begin.

Within a short span of time he sold his home and started searching to way to fill his emptiness and regain oneness. From his early age his interests were quantum physics, psychology, and cosmology. As per him, "Not that I mastered all of them, but I got the gist of what would help me find the answers that everyone is looking for. So I went into a period where I did my research to convince myself that this feeling of oneness really has a correspondence in reality." He says, "Happiness is an inside job."

Education: His initial study was done in his home village of Krishnaganj, West Bengal. Then he joined Scottish Church College with a scholarship, where his professor was famous Satyen Bose. There he discovered that science of physics has its own elegance. In 1953 he joined to Kharagpur IIT. He was among the first to graduate with a doctorate degree after five years. His paper was published in the American Journal of Chemical Physics, which grabbed the attention of Dr. William MacMillan of the University of California, Los Angeles. He offered him to Los Angeles on a Sloan foundation Fellowship to continue his post-doctoral work.

Career: In 1960, laser was discovered and he was hired by Xerox Corporation on part-time basis. He was attached with Xerox until 1965. Due to some complexity in work he returned to India to teach at Bose Institute. He refreshed him by being aloof from competitive scientific world. In 1968 he returned to Northrup, started working on carbon-dioxide laser. With all odds he ultimately succeeded to establish LASIK procedure. The patent was in his name but right retained by Northrup. For that they rewarded stocks.

Code Name God

After that he left the job with lots of money, started enjoying the life in his own way. At that point his spiritual question began, which resulted in the book "Code Name God".

Dr. Mani Bhaumik,
We are a group of Spanish Medicine students of Navarra´s University and we are now investigating about Lasik procedure for a Physics project.
We were wondering if you could provide us the physic´s bases of the technique.
Our email adress is: [email protected]
Thank you very much
