Sanskrit College Kolkata was founded on the 1st of January, 1824 when the British reign continued over India. Its foundation was based on a recommendation by Thomas Babington Macaulay and H.T James Princep. This college was mainly brought up to uphold the Indian classical literature and to promote the growth of Sanskrit both among the Britishers and the Indians. Education was also imparted on other ancient literature, philosophy, Hindu law, grammar as well as Indian culture. It survives as one among the oldest educational institutions in India. Sanskrit College is located on College street(Bankim Chatterjee street) in central Kolkata.The world famous name Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar had been both a student as well as the principal of this college and it was during his time that this college rose into prominence. This college is run by the government of West Bengal. It offers an undergraduate degree in Sanskrit language, Pali language, Linguistics, Ancient Indian and world history and recently Bengali and English departments has also come up.
