After his school education Amit Mitra pursued his graduation and then his post graduation in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics (1970). Later, he also pursued a Doctorate Degree in Economics. Dr. Amit Mitra did his Ph D in economics from the Duke University of the United States of America in 1978. The career of Amit Mitra began as a teacher as he has been teaching in a number of universities around the world, such as the Duke University where he was a Ph D scholar himself, and the Franklin Marshall College in Pennsylvania. He continued with his teaching career in USA for more than ten years and has also received the Sears-Roebuck Foundation Award in 1990 which is awarded for some distinguished and valuable contribution in field of teaching and research. Dr. Amit Mitra has been the Secretary General of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) for which he is so well known. He has also served as a Director of IDBI, the Gas Authority of India Ltd as well as the Advisory Board of India Fund, UTI. Since March 2010 he has also been working as an honorary and part time director of the National Aviation Company of India Ltd. (NACIL). From March 25, 2003 to March 24, 2006, Dr. Amit Mitra was the Additional Director of Steel Authority of India Ltd. At the same time he was the Independent Director of the Bata India Ltd.
