Hasim Abdul Halim ends his 29 years speaker post on 31st of May 2011 by the election of new speaker. He create a new record in the world for holding the speaker post at a stretch of 29 years.In 1982 he elected second time in west Bengal assembly election and became speaker. He is famous for his good relations with oppositions.

Hasim Abdul Halim ends his 29 years speaker post on 31st of May 2011 by the election of new speaker. He create a new record in the world for holding the speaker post at a stretch of 29 years. As an criminal lawyer he started his career in Bankshal court and Kolkata High court. He first came in media focus as a lawyer of Hemanta Basu murder case. He obey the eminent lawyer Shehansu Acharya as his teacher.
In 1977 he won his first election as a first contestant and became law minister in West Bengal government. On that time speaker was Mansur Habibullah. In 1982 he elected second time in west Bengal assembly election and became speaker. He is famous for his good relations with oppositions. All MLAs' respect him from each party. One time the number of opposition is so less that no one could got the opposition leader post. On that time he elected Pankaj Banerjee as an opposition leader. He own said that he studied too much after got the speaker post. He studied different countries rules and regulation of assembly for acquiring knowledge. He said that he does not know that any persons who hold the speaker post about a long years in the world except a person hold 24-25 years in a British County. As per him that he always trying neutral stand. He always said that the importance of assembly is for oppositions only not for ruling parties.
He said that he came in assembly from his of student life to heard the speech of Somnath Lahiri and Joyti Basu like eminent leaders. He also said that later Haripada Bharati, Kasinath Maitra, Bishnukant Shastri's speech attract him. As an opposition the speech of Siddharta Shankar Ray's speech also remarkable. He is sorry to say that today's most of MLAs do not come in assembly after proper study. No body goes to the large library of assembly though there are exceptions like Sougata Roy and Kashi Mishra.
Halim Saheb felt hurt when some members of assembly broke the furniture of assembly few years ago.
He said about new speaker Advocate Biman Bandhyopadhya that he help the new speaker always when the new speaker ask him. Biman Bandhyopadhya already meet with him and he guide him about rules and regulations of Assembly.
