Life of Suchitra Bhattacharya.
Born on 10th January in Bhagalpur, Bihar; Suchitra Bhattacharya was interested in writing from her very childhood. She graduated from the Jogamaya Devi College under the Calcutta University. After her Graduation she was married off and that was the time she took a break from writing. She started writing again in the late seventies. It was only in the mid eighties that she took to novels from short stories. With the Publication of the Kacher Dewal, she became one of the most prominent writers of Bengal.Suchitra Bhattacharya's Career
She took up many odd jobs in her early youth finally joining the public service commission. She soon left the job and dedicated her entire being into writing. Her writings basically revolve around social issues. She has a beautiful capacity of engrossing her readers with her story telling power. Her compact manner of telling a story separates her from the other writers. She writes mainly on the crisis of all human relationships and the changing values of the present era which involves degeneration of Honesty and morality. Being a woman writer she portrays the sufferings of woman from all classes of life and society; although she is not a feminist.
Over the past years she has been writing more than 20 novels and a large number of short stories in a huge number of magazines. Some of her acclaimed novels are Kaacher Manush, Dahan, Kacher Dewal, Hemonter pakhi, Neel Ghurni, Rangin Prithibi etc. Her Novels and short stories have been translated into a number of Indian Languages. Her novel Dahan has been used to make a film by the famous Bengali director, Rituparno Ghosh.

Suchitra Bhattacharya has received a huge number of Awards which include the Bhuban Mohini Medal from Calcutta University in 2004, the Katha Award 1997 from Delhi, the Tarashankar Award in 2000 from Kolkata and many other awards. She also received the Sahityo Setu Award in 2004.
